Intro to Division

Image
We have just finished up with multiplication...for now. We will still be doing the times tables check-in to ensure mental math practice but we are now starting on division. The task: Using base ten blocks, make the number 279. We then discussed the different base ten that we used to represent the number: I then gave them the challenge of splitting 279 into 9 EQUAL GROUPS: We then discussed the division vocabulary and what each part of the equation means. I then asked them to find a different amount of groups that they can split 279 into EQUAL GROUPS:

Shadow Puppets

Image
The past few weeks, we have been learning about light and shadows. We learned about different objects that are translucent, transparent and opaque and which objects create shadows. We are now incorporating literacy into science. Each group of students has planned out a play script for their shadow puppet play, they have written a rough copy and have included dialogue in their script. They then had to have a conference with the teacher to go over their scripts and any kinks or edits. Using what they have learned in Light and Shadows, they were then asked to figure out the best materials for making shadow puppets and how to create a shadow with their puppet. Watch this space to see the final product! Students creating the stage for our shadow puppet play

Sundials and Shadows

We've built sundials and aluminum statues. What will we do with these? Stay tuned to find out or ask your student for a sneak peek :)

Remembrance Day

REMEMBRANCE DAY The past few days students in Grades 4 and 5 have been learning, talking, and understanding the importance and significance of Remembrance Day.  Students explored Remembrance Day through a variety of mediums: Art, Music, Literature and Writing.         .                     Students reflected on the meaning of Remembrance Day through exploring the meaning of the song Highway of Hero's by The Trews.  Students explored a variety of different art styles including Metis Dot Art and Georgia O'Keefe to create Poppy Art.

First Virtual Assembly!

Image
This Friday (October 23rd) we had our FIRST EVER Keeler virtual assembly! Each class connected onto the assembly through Team Meets.  We were still able to acknowledge the land, sing O Canada and honour presenting students with nominations.  This week's assembly focus was on the pillar of the Belonging. We discussed what Belonging is and how we can show Belonging. Ask your students about what they think Belonging means and how we show it at Keeler School!

Place Value

Image
This week, we have been looking at place value and taking a closer look at the meaning and value of each digit in a number. We also looked how different ways to represent a number (standard form, expanded form, word form). We did an activity where students had a large place value chart. They were then given a number and had to represent that number using base ten blocks. They then had to create a place value chart in their notebook and draw their base ten blocks. Finally, they wrote their number from standard form to expanded form. Below are a few examples:
